Açai is a dark purple berry with the appearance of a grape, the berry consists of no less than 80% pit. Acai powder is made from the Acai berry. The Acai berry is a small dark purple fruit that grows on the Acai palm (Euterpe Oleracea). This palm is native to the Amazon region of Central and South America. The Acai berry has been used for centuries by the indigenous Indian tribes. It is almost impossible to consume Acai berries fresh due to the tropical climate. Once the berries have fallen off the tree, they can go bad in as little as an hour. For that reason they are only available in the Netherlands in pulp, juice or powder.
